Since I don't work anymore, we don't have money to spare for car repairs. My husband has a 94 Pickup truck and I have a 94 van. As you can imagine, being so old, our cars need frequent repairs. Thankfully, my husband can do most of them for us.
He's not a real mechanic, he watched his dad work on cars growing up, and learned a few things. What he doesn't know he learns. Whenever we buy a new (really old) car, he buys a manual on fixing that particular vehicle. They aren't that expensive, maybe around $20 at the auto parts store. He has found these books invaluable to him in working on our many problems.
This weekend he changed the oil in both our cars, put in new air filters, rebuilt a carburetor for a friend, and put on back brakes for the same friend. He doesn't always get it right the first time, but he tries until he does. Best of all, I think he's fixed my van which broke down right before our Disney trip. He wasn't sure it was fixable, but he changed the thermostat, and it seems to be working now!

Way to go Ronnie! My dad always worked on our cars also. He learned the hard way also - trial and error.
Good for you that your husband can fix your cars! I fix our cars whenever they need anything. We get by for almost nothing on repairs, and I get a feeling of accomplishment by doing it. I think more people should do their own service on vehicles. People get discouraged and trade them off, only to be a slave to another payment. Tell him to keep up the good work! Heather's husband

Isn't it nice to have a man around who's willing to not only do what needs to be done, but is willing to keep trying until he gets it right!

My Old Guy is just about hopeless when it comes to cars, but luckily, our next door neighbor is a mechanic... and he loves to do weekend work for the extra cash.

thats so neat....my son works on his car a lot...learned by trial and error...these days you have to do things like that...
That is awesome! My hubs is, thankfully, a great mechanic. If we had to have a person come out from John Deere every time something broke down, we would be in the poor house, lol. One time, when he was doing something to one of our Ford trucks, he called the parts department of the Ford place and they didn't have a clue. They let him come and read the info on the walls of the shop to figure out what he needed. He also goes behind the counter in NAPA (to get his own stuff) because they always give him the wrong parts, haha.
Hi! I have my own live in mechanic too! I wanted to share with you that if you live near a library, you can go there to look at the books too. My DH will look at them and then copy the page that he needs. They told him at the library that it was ok to copy the few pages he needed...it was not like he was going to copy the whole book and sell it.
Just another money saving tip so that if he was working on a friend's car and your hubby doesn't want to buy the whole book.
