Corn Experiment- The Results

Back in June, I joined in with The Blind Pig and The Acorn's corn experiment.  Tipper wanted to find out if corn planted on good planting days turned out better than corn planted on bad planting days.  Tipper and a few of the others had problems with their tests, so they weren't able to finish them.  I don't know who else was able to finish their test, but I wanted to share my results.

The corn I planted on the good days did end up being taller than the bad day corn.  It was probably 18 inches or so taller.  In the picture above, the good corn is on the right side.  That was the biggest difference.  Both produced corn, however some evil critters ate more of it than we did!  We probably ended up with about 6 good ears that were edible.  There were maybe a couple more ears on the good side.  I don't think that's enough to decide if the planting day made a difference or not with ear production.

It was fun participating in this little experiment with Tipper!  Maybe next year I can figure out how to keep all the creepy crawlies away from my garden.

I think you showed results of good day / bad day planting. Isn't it amazing how a blogging community can check theses things out? It would be very beneficial for all who participated to post exactly what they did, how or why it did or did not work out and then try again next year......thus making the results or lack thereof credible and setting the groundwork for another years' try. Happy corn planting and eating!

Well atleast one of us got to actually finish the experiment. And get an ear of corn or two to eat.

Very interesting Nancy. It seems like the critters got more of everyone's corn this year!

Nancy, that looked like it was a lot of fun. Getting to watch your corn grow, I dont think I could've got it to grow out here in AZ. :0)
It still look yummy.

Have a great week.

Heidi

Cool experiment.

We have lots of corn around our area but mostly rice and soybeans.

So what makes a day good or bad?

me again Nancy...if you ever see a pot of evening primrose (like in my post earlier) buy it!!! It loves hard clay and hot sun - I don't do anything to mine but just enjoy the blossoms in Spring time! One pot will spread and take over where you want it to. We have some planted out by the street on either side of the driveway and we love it.

I was also wandering about good versus bad days. What is a good day? What is a bad day? We plant our corn after the fear of frost is over. Usually in the first of April or late March.
P.S. I think your corn needed to be fertilized. Seven dust for veggies will keep the bugs out.
P.S.S. You can have your soil tested for free by the Farm Service Agency in your state. Southern States will send off your sample for free for you, so you can see what it needs for planting next year.

Shannon, This was an experiment on whether corn grown by the signs would grow better or not. I believe it was by the astrological signs, maybe from the farmer's almanac. Not, sure, just helping out Tipper.

I didn't fertilize after the initial planting. I did put seven dust on it twice, but I didn't want to put it on too much, wasn't sure how much was too much. Thanks for the tips! I can use all the help I can get, lol!

Hi Nancy, I have tried to grow corn for the past 7 years with no good results. The corn sprouts and gets tall and pretty, but as soon as the ears develop, the moths lay their eggs inside of the corn and the larvae eat on the ears. What is left, if any, the birds soon destroy. I finally gave up. Hope you have better results next year! blessings,Kathleen

Hi Nancy! You know I have always wondered about planting days. The Farmers Almanac is so handy on those types of things. I am happy to see that there was some truth to it. But I am sad that the wormies enjoyed your corn more then you did. I have heard people say they put caster oil under the corn to deter pests. I don't know if it works, lol. Have a blessed day!!!!

Hey Nancy! Thank you so much for playing along-and posting the results. Next year I hope you'll join me again-and I promise to be better organized, start earlier, and have something easier than corn : )

That really is amazing that planting days can make such a difference. We always have trouble growing corn in our garden. I gave up, and just get it from the farmer down the street.
