Review- Draw and Write Through History: Creation Through Jonah

My son has been wanting to do some art for a while.  I didn't have any formal curriculum, so we had just been winging it.  I was so excited when we received Draw and Write Through History: Creation Through Jonah to review.  It's written by Carylee Gressman, a homeschooling mother of seven and illustrated by Peggy Dick who is a former graphic-design artist.

I am not good at drawing, but my son wanted me to draw with him while he was learning to draw from the book.  I actually think my skill has improved since sitting with him and following the book.  It makes it easier since they do each drawing in steps instead of as a whole.  You can see a sample lesson here.

After each drawing lesson  there is a page of copywork about that time period.  This makes it a good add-on to any curriculum since it has historical facts, cursive practice, and includes art.  It would be great for any child, not just homeschoolers.

I love how it includes dinosaurs, since my son is so fascinated with them.  He really enjoyed drawing them and has included them on many of the other drawings from the book.  It has a been a great supplement for him since he is reading Genesis right now.  Below is his drawing of Noah's ark.  He added a dinosaur because he loves them so much!

This book sells for $12.00 and you can buy it through their website, or you can save a little buy all for $40.  It is aimed for ages 8 and up, but can easily be adapted for younger children.  I am so happy that this has my son excited about drawing again.  We will probably buy the next book in the series when we are finished with this one.

This book was provided by CPR Publishing through Mama Bzz for me to review.  All opinions are my own.

Have you checked out Answers In Genesis? It is a magazine from Ken Hamm about dinosaurs, creation, etc., from a biblical view point. Very good and very scientific. I have this as a link in my sidebar. Any Christian homeschooling families should have this resource in their home!

The art curriculum looks like one I would have bought if it were available when I home-schooled my children, back in the old days.

We used to draw while my dad led our wisdom searches in the mornings, before doing school work. Great fun!
