Sunday's Song- Stand Up, Stand Up For Jesus

 I was looking through an old hymnal last night and saw this song.  I haven't heard it in ages, so I thought I would share it.  Have a beautiful Sunday!

Stand Up, Stand Up For Jesus

1. Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
    ye soldiers of the cross;
    lift high his royal banner,
    it must not suffer loss.
    From victory unto victory
    his army shall he lead,
    till every foe is vanquished,
    and Christ is Lord indeed.

2. Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
    the trumpet call obey;
    forth to the mighty conflict,
    in this his glorious day.
    Ye that are brave now serve him
    against unnumbered foes;
    let courage rise with danger,
    and strength to strength oppose.

3. Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
    stand in his strength alone;
    the arm of flesh will fail you,
    ye dare not trust your own.
    Put on the gospel armor,
    each piece put on with prayer;
    where duty calls or danger,
    be never wanting there.

4. Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
    the strife will not be long;
    this day the noise of battle,
    the next the victor's song.
    To those who vanquish evil
    a crown of life shall be;
    they with the King of Glory
    shall reign eternally.

Glad to see the words of "Stand Up for Jesus" on your blog. But sad that I hear from so many that our great hymns and gospel songs seem to be a fondly remembered experience of years gone by. Even though the author of this song, George Duffield, was born nearly two centuries ago, it still has a message for us.

If you enjoy reading about our hymns and their authors, I invite you to check out my daily blog on the subject, Wordwise Hymns. Today's post includes the most unusual story of how "Stand Up for Jesus came to be written.

And if you’ll excuse a brief “commercial”... With the arrival of fall, we begin to think of the Christmas season up ahead. If you do not have a good book on the subject of our Christmas carols, I encourage you to take a look at mine, Discovering the Songs of Christmas. In it, I discuss the history and meaning of 63 carols and Christmas hymns. The book is available through Amazon. (Might make a great gift too!)
