The Garden is Planted

Y'all won't believe what happened! You know all those seeds I showed you that I bought online and was going to plant? I lost them! They just disappeared. We turned the house upside down looking for them and you know what we found? We found a spoon and fork in the trash can, and 3 dirty diapers in my crockpot(it was in a bottom cabinet). Eww, I know! Some little short fella has been putting things where they don't belong. He has gotten really good at throwing things away lately, but usually it's trash. I don't understand for the life of me why he put the diapers in the crockpot and not the trash. I am starting to think he threw my seeds away and we didn't notice until the trash was gone. Cause they are nowhere to be found!

We went out and bought new seeds, cheap ones, this time because we didn't have a lot to spend on them, since we weren't planning on it. It finally stopped raining constantly where we could plant. My family says I cheated by using the black fabric. Do any of y'all use it too? Or do you just weed the garden? Someone told me I wouldn't have to weed nearly as much if I used it. And you know me, I am lazy, so I used it. Since it's our first garden, I thought I could use all the help I can get, lol!

That's a strawberry blooming in the picture above. They look a lot better than they did when we first planted them. The picture below is of where we planted the potatoes. You can't really see anything unless you look closer.

Here's a close-up. Isn't this cool! It's the potato plant coming up!

I just read something in a magazine that said a 10 foot by 16 foot garden is fine for a family of 4. That scared me, because our garden is so much bigger than that! Ours is around 25 foot by 50 foot. So, what do you think, is my garden too big? Or is their estimating on the small side?

I remember my son used to throw things in the toilet and try to flush them. Roto-Rooter was at my house a good bit.

I think that black fabric works pretty good. If your garden is too big you could always set up a stand and sell the excess or take some of your harvest to a homeless shelter. I don't get to have a garden here because I travel too much. My friends in MS have one, so I spend time helping them work in it. I love working in the dirt! Be sure to take more pictures as your garden grows.

I would be using the black weed mat too, but I'm making do with newspapers and mulch this year.

If you have too many veggies, you could either can the excess or give them away to neighbors I suppose.

I can't begin to tell you how many toys I lost in either the garbage can or down the toilet, so all I can say is...kids will be kids!
It's a good thing you found the dirty diapers now though... could you imagine the stink later on?
*URP*!!

Uh... not to sound ungrateful, but you don't plan on cooking any meals out of the crockpot when I come over this weekend, do you?

It might take me a while to get over the image of the dirty diapers in there.

LOL... the crockpot diapers cracked me up!

My parents have a garden (that hubby and I take advantage of!) and it's about twice the size of yours. So that's 4 adults and one toddler, but we do give away a good bit and stock the freezer with it,too, so I think yours is a good size. You can always give it away if it's too much, or sell it.

Oh, and we use the black material, too. :)

I would use the black stuff if our garden was smaller too. This year we are going to do the newspaper thing when the plants come up. I normally do straw and space wider so I can mow around the rows. I will say this about size. Do you remember the pic of the hubs spreading manure on ours? We freeze about 60 gallon size baggies of corn off of the cob from it. Give away another five Gator loads and then the boy sold 200 dollars worth at the end of the driveway. It is normal to come home from town and find fresh veggies that we don't grow on my back door step from our neighbors, anticipating our corn hand outs. it is sort-of a tradition of ours now. One year we didn't have time to let the boy sell, because the corn was ready the day before we left for vacation. We told TWO people to pick what they wanted. The next morning there were cars lined up down the road and about 18 people going to town on it.

We are going to try a garden again this year. Haven't had much luck in the past.

I think my daughter threw my keys away, and a couple of sippie cups too, when she was about a year and a half.

I used the black plastic until our garden got to big - ours is about 50 by 300 - and it's usually FULL. And of course, I'm starting to run out of lots of stuff (I guess 45 sauce tomato plants were not enough). That is a bumer about loosing the seeds!

You're smart to put down the black fabric. Weeding is a pain, especially when it starts to get really hot out. The bigger the garden, the better. You'll have lots to can, freeze and share with friends. And where we live lots of people put their extra produce out by the road to sell on a little table with a lock box. People are generally pretty honest about paying. Just make sure you chain down the money box. Oh, you're going to love all those fresh veggies!
