Now You See It, Now You Don't
About a year ago, I started off with 12 guinea keets. They were so cute! Anyway, they grew up to be not as cute to some, but still beautiful to me. Since all of the attacks, I only have 4 guineas left. So, one day when I could find only 3 at nightfall, I was worried. But, the next day, that guinea was back. I thought it was a miracle!
Every night since then, there have only been 3 guineas. But usually sometime during the day I will see the fourth one. I have found one nest with a few eggs. But, no guinea on it. There must be another nest somewhere since there is almost always one guinea missing. I am really worried that one night something is going to get her. Hopefully she's well hidden.
I have heard people say that if there are too many male guineas, the eggs won't be fertile. If that is true, the eggs probably won't hatch. Since, of the 4 guineas I have 3 of them are males. Does anyone know if this is true? Also, do male guineas ever sit on the nest or only female?

Book Review- The Noticer by Andy Andrews
Once I started reading The Noticer, I didn't want to put it down. It's about a mysterious old man named Jones. He meets different people who are going through some kind of crisis in their life. The people he meets are kind of leery of him at first because he always seems to know who they are and what problems they are facing. Another strange thing about the old man, is that everyone seems to know him or someone he knows. He's just always around and always helping others.Jones notices things about people and likes to offer what he calls perspective or a broader view. This encourages people to look at themselves, make changes, and begin their lives anew. It's all in how you look at your situation. It's making lemons out of lemonade. He teaches people to make small changes that will lead to big results in their lives.
It's a very heart-warming read. I liked getting to know the characters and seeing how Jones would help each one. The book has a lot of useful information in it to help us become not just better noticers, but better people. I really enjoyed The Noticer and recommend reading it. It may inspire you like it did me!

Happy Birthday Mitchell!
Today was my son Mitchell's 12th birthday. I can't believe he's that old. It seems like just yesterday, he was Hunter's age. Man, time really flies!
We had a little party for him today with a few friends and family. Remember the friendship bread we made? He wanted that for his birthday cake. So, I made him a cake size one for us to decorate. He loves that stuff!
My husband wanted a traditional cake, so my friend, Barb, made this chocolate bundt cake for us too. It was really good! Thanks Barb!
Mitchell said it was almost his best party ever. So, I asked what the best one was, but he couldn't remember. Silly boy! He got a lot of legos today, so he was a very happy boy.
Happy Birthday Mitchell!!! We love you very much!!!

House in the Woods
Right before Easter, when my cousin died, I got a chance to talk to some relatives I hadn't spoken to in forever. They gave me some family history I didn't know. They told me that they grew up on the land right beside ours in a house. Only it wasn't the house I thought, it was further back, way off the road.
So, me and my husband got on the four-wheeler one day in search of it. It's not too far from our house. Further than I'd want to walk, but a short ride away. The house is in these trees. I would have never know, it's so well-hidden.
It was in fairly good condition to be about 100 years old and abandoned. I really thought the roof would have fallen in on it, but it still stood. I love old houses like this one. it brings back memories of my childhood. I had an aunt whose house was similar to this one. I had such fun there!

Solitary Confinement
Over the weekend me and my husband built a new pen we can use to separate chickens. It's our hope to be able to separate them by breed, mostly. Then we can get purebred chicks off of them. But, I found another great use for it. We can use it as a hospital for sick or hurt chickens or as a place to punish bad roosters.
I'm sure you remember the rooster who was attacking my youngest son. Well, while we were out there building the pen, which is actually inside their outside run, that rooster attacked my son again. We were all in the run, helping to build the pen when it happened. It's so strange that there are 3 other roosters and Hunter can be around all of them without getting attacked. So, we can use this extra pen to put that rooster in when the little one goes outside and wants to see the chickens. It's jail for chickens.
Here's my favorite rooster, Prince. For some reason, he doesn't like my husband very much. So, this ends up happening a lot when the hubby is out there. Although, my husband does kind of egg it on. I think Prince is jealous, and he's just trying to protect me. But, if he attacks Hunter, he's going in to solitary confinement too!

The Garden is Planted
Y'all won't believe what happened! You know all those seeds I showed you that I bought online and was going to plant? I lost them! They just disappeared. We turned the house upside down looking for them and you know what we found? We found a spoon and fork in the trash can, and 3 dirty diapers in my crockpot(it was in a bottom cabinet). Eww, I know! Some little short fella has been putting things where they don't belong. He has gotten really good at throwing things away lately, but usually it's trash. I don't understand for the life of me why he put the diapers in the crockpot and not the trash. I am starting to think he threw my seeds away and we didn't notice until the trash was gone. Cause they are nowhere to be found!
We went out and bought new seeds, cheap ones, this time because we didn't have a lot to spend on them, since we weren't planning on it. It finally stopped raining constantly where we could plant. My family says I cheated by using the black fabric. Do any of y'all use it too? Or do you just weed the garden? Someone told me I wouldn't have to weed nearly as much if I used it. And you know me, I am lazy, so I used it. Since it's our first garden, I thought I could use all the help I can get, lol!
That's a strawberry blooming in the picture above. They look a lot better than they did when we first planted them. The picture below is of where we planted the potatoes. You can't really see anything unless you look closer.
Here's a close-up. Isn't this cool! It's the potato plant coming up!
I just read something in a magazine that said a 10 foot by 16 foot garden is fine for a family of 4. That scared me, because our garden is so much bigger than that! Ours is around 25 foot by 50 foot. So, what do you think, is my garden too big? Or is their estimating on the small side?

New Chicks!
A while back, before a lot of our chickens were killed, my cousin asked for some eggs to try to hatch. He had gotten an incubator and wanted to try it out. I gave him some eggs and told him to let me know how it went.
This same cousin has been wanting my black sex-link chickens. He had 5 chicks hatch from my eggs. So, he agreed to trade the biddies he's raised from my eggs for the sex-links. Plus, he gave me 3 extra Rhode Island Red pullets. They're the dark red ones you see in the picture. Now, you're probably wondering why I would would want to trade the sex-links. Well, they are egg-eaters. Now, when they free-ranged, they never ate eggs. But, since I have to keep them in the coop and run, they have started eating eggs again. I wanted to get rid of them before they taught my hens to eat eggs too.
Since I had 5 roosters at the time I gave the eggs away, I ended up with some really mixed chicks. They are precious, though. There are 3 who have Polish in them, because they have the top hatter feathers on their head. One of those 3 has feathers on it's feet too. So, that means it's mixed with a Polish and Partridge Cochin. It's the black one.
This yellowish one in the front of the picture below has white specks on it's head that are fluffy, but not really like a top hatter. But, it also has feathers on it's feet. And it has a really funky looking comb on it's head. Kind of like a rose comb maybe?
I am so happy to have some new babies that came from my eggs. Even if they are mutts, lol!

Sunday's Song- Soon and Very Soon
This is the first gospel song I ever remember hearing. A gospel group came to our church when I was young and sang it. I liked it so much, I talked my parents into buying their record.
I hope everyone has a great Sunday!
We're going to see the King
Soon and very soon
We're going to see the King
Soon and very soon
We're going to see the King
Hallelujah!
Hallelujah!
We're going to see the King
No more crying there!
We're going
To see the King
Hallelujah!
Hallelujah!
We're going to see the king
No more dying there!
We're going
To see the king
Soon and very soon
We're going to see the King
Soon and very soon
We're going to see the King
Soon and very soon
We're going to see the King
Hallelujah!
Hallelujah!
We're going to see the king
I hope everyone has a great Sunday!

Friendship Bread
About a week and a half ago someone at church gave me a bag of mush with directions on how to take care of it. She said it was easy, so I said I would give it a try. Some of y'all have probably heard of, or tried it. It's called Friendship bread, supposedly started by the Amish.
The directions said to mush the bag every day. On the sixth day you're supposed to add more ingredients to the bag and mush again. You keep mushing until the tenth day, then you add some more stuff and split it up. You put the parts you split into baggies to give to someone else as a starter for the bread.
I was kind of skeptical of this whole thing. It said to put all this cinnamon in it and on top. Since it made 3 pans of bread, I decided to make 2 without the cinnamon and one with it, beacuse I wasn't sure if I would like all that cinnamon.
As it turns out, without cinnamon, it tastes pretty much like cake. Nothing like bread! My oldest son loves the cinnamon one. He said it is the best thing ever. Maybe I should have made them all with cinnamon. But, heck, I was expecting it to be bread, not cake! Have you ever tried it? Do you like it?
